Community Spotlight: Celebrating James Fitzgerald and a Legacy of Service

For nearly three decades, James helped strengthen food access across Clark County, leaving a lasting impact on the organizations and neighbors he served.

His journey began in 1997 with The Salvation Army's food warehouse, which later became part of what is now Clark County Food Bank. James was instrumental in the early planning and development of the food distribution system that is now operating across Clark County.

“I didn't expect to spend 28 years in the food banking world," James shared. "But I'm so glad I did."

After helping launch Clark County Food Bank's distribution program, James went on to become the first Executive Director of FISH of Vancouver for eight years. During that time, the organization expanded its facility and more than doubled the number of neighbors served.

His career has been filled with milestones, but one memory continues to stand above the rest. During his first Walk & Knock in 1997, James watched thousands of volunteers come together to collect 250,000 pounds of food in a single day.

"I knew then that I was part of something so much bigger than myself," he said.

As James retires from a remarkable career in food banking, we are grateful for his leadership, partnership, and years of service. While he begins a new chapter, his impact will continue through the strong network of organizations, volunteers, and community partners working together to address hunger across Clark County.
